Interview Techniques

Having taken part as an observer, interviewer and interviewee in today’s session, list the skills, personal qualities or previous experiences you have which would be of value to a potential employer?

The qualities I have are good communicative skills, knowledge of terminology, experience, passion, and enthusiasm and would work hard in any task that I was set and perform to the best of my ability.

List any concerns you may have about your management of any interview situation.

I would be concerned about my nerves getting the better of me. Although I would be prepared I may find myself stuttering or taking mini pauses to re focus myself and trying not to focus on my nerves.

Having watched or taken part in mock interviews, list the common weaknesses in an interviewee’s performance

The most common weaknesses in the interviewee’s performances was the fact that we were not prepared as much as we could be. There were also a few stutters and pauses when answering some questions.

How could these be overcome?

Being more prepared for the interview and knowing what to say so that stuttering and pausing would not be an issue when being interviewed.

List 8 key factors important to an employer in interviewing a potential employee.
1.  Confidence
2. Preparation
3. Good body language
4. Terminology
5. Punctuality
6. Appropriate dress code for the interview
7. Passion for the job title

8.  Good work ethic

Rebeccas Documentary Evaluation

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mH6oa50YdTs&feature=youtu.be

Constraints experienced- I experienced a few constraints throughout making my documentary. My video that i was editing got deleted which resulted in me having to start all over again which was very time consuming. As all my footage was lost i had to go and ask a few people to let me film them again, so trying to get similar answers was quite hard as i needed it to fit in with the footage i already had. Another constraint that effected my documentary was trying to get the people i was filming to be serious and not laugh. This took quite a long time and looking back at my footage I had to cut out quite a lot of my research as people were laughing and not finding it serious.

Your management of the production -
I think that collecting the video clips were probably the hardest part as like i mentioned before it took many takes for it to be serious and for it to be portrayed in the right way. Apart from that i think my final outcome was effective and managed to get across the theme of social media sites being a big part of peoples lives but also a a big part which i decided i wanted to focus on when filming my documentary, bullying. I found some good stories which show how social media can effect people largely, so much that it can lead to suicide. i think including this in my documentary gets the point across of how teenagers are definitely being impacted by the internet. A main factor when working on my documentary was the fact that the final video was much different to how I pictured it. I first wanted my main focus to be purely on image and how it effects people on a day to day basis. As you can see in my presentation I had a clear idea of what I wanted to do but as it came to collecting information and asking people I soon decided to change my idea. As I did more research into image and social networking sites I found many issues of forms of bullying and harassment all caused from things posted on the internet. I thought this would be a good thing to tie in with my documentary as I could go on to talk about the actual harms that being on social networking sites can lead to and also the amount people judge other people upon their image.

Willow watched my video and said that it was clear and effective and that it included good themes of social media and how it can lead to bullying. He said the fact that i also included clips of people talking about bullying extended my document further by making it much more touching rather than just writing about the effects of using social media.

I think i managed my time well by getting my clips filmed on time and allowed myself the time to go back and re film as some of the clips were not serious enough or not clear enough. Loosing my work was a real constraint but i do think i managed to sort it out quickly and efficiently and ended up making a documentary which targeted my brief. My main aim was to talk about image and social media and what it can lead to and i think i met my criteria.

Understanding and Interpreting A Brief

When given a brief it is important that it is read through and carefully understood so that the employee can work to the best of their ability with the correct understanding of the brief. If an employee does not understand part of a brief or they want to clarify certain parts and even legal and ethical issues they are allowed to speak to managers and co-workers about the problem. Working to a brief is beneficial in most areas of work for many reasons. It helps to enumerate the key responsibilities for a job and helps the employee know its specific functions. It helps to let employees to understand what is expected and to know what skills and abilities they need to working at in order to be successful in the job and get all the work done. The brief helps to keep employees to stick to the correct job and to know the goals they are working towards. Having a brief set out in a job/work environment is very useful and valuable as it helps create and maintain a workforce structure.

There are many different types of briefs in the work industry which can be distributed from a client to the person working on that brief. The different types of briefs are;

Contractual which exists when a producers and commissioner have a contract between them and that contract should not be broken and if it is legal action could be taken forward.
Formal which  exists when the brief is written with a specific choice of words and written with strict legal guidelines.
Informal brief which consists when a managers have face to face meetings with each other normally based in a social environment. It allows notes to be passed in an informal manner so that the two can discuss notes face to face rather than sending emails forward and back and maybe lacking in communication and understanding over a computer so this allows a more relaxed atmosphere for discussion.
Negotiated brief allows producers to negotiate on certain parts of the production.
Tender brief is when the cost and budget of the production is based upon the clients. The manager will then choose the best offer from the particular client.
Competition brief gives employees details of what they have to do and when a certain task has to be completed by. There may even be prizes involved in this particular brief.
Co-operative briefs are shared by the producers of the project. There may be a different manager in charger of a different section and topic of the project.

When working to a brief it allows the employee to work with the manager to the best of their ability. Communication should be a crucial part of this to allow no mistakes to be made and the work therefore being done to the standard of which is expected. An employee should know and understand that whatever brief they are working with they must be working to the same conditions and standards so that it can be completed outstandingly. Certain briefs such as negotiated briefs allows employees to discuss things with the person who is in charge. So if they employee knows it will get the work done to an outstanding level but knows they may need a week longer to complete it, this type of brief allows the employee discuss extending the deadline of their project for whatever reasons they may have. This is where communication is key between the workers and managers. It will allow the employee to have a better understanding and the managers to get a better understanding of who they are working with.

Social action and community media

Social action and community media

Social Action
Social action media is used to raise awareness of a particular subject or cause, often aimed with the intention of promoting action or change amongst its intended audience. It is often produced within a specific community. I am going to be writing in detail about social action and community media and talk about the relevance and the greater importance of the subject.

Social action and community media is a form of advertising a specific topic which is not rarely spoken about or is not a commonly known subject to people which gives an opportunity to do something about it. Social action media is named in the sense that it is media produce with the aim to provoke social action. This form of media usually takes on controversial subjects as a way of influencing a change. Subjects that are commonly looked at are smoking, alcholism, politics, racism, drug addiction and many more. Films may be made on these topics and can either consist of factual information or be very dramatised. The films will focus on the most tragic outcome to impact the audience further and entice them and create more interest as such. Juxtaposing that films may be made in such a way taking a more confrontational approach and by challenging individuals who may be implicated in a particular issue.

The main purpose of social action media is to inspire change. This change can take place on a local, national or even international level depending on the subject matter and the scale of production. Productions on a more local scale tend to tackle causes relevant to the community. Larger scale productions and international productions will tend to talk about larger issues as they know they will be attracting more attention. They will often go through more planning and consideration when putting their production together. This has obvious reasons as larger productions will need to reach people all over the world creating a lasting effect. Social media is one of the largest ways to reach and target the audience. Especially sites such as YouTube which allows you to target your demographic more accurately allowing you to upload videos and being able to communicate with the audience through the comments and also creating videos of someone expressing their opinions and answering any questions the audience may have.

The impact of social media can effect people in many different ways. It has been the subject of much discussion. People may argue that social media is inflicting certain emotions upon the audience which they may not feel. For example drug abuse films showing extreme physical and harmful outcomes may shock the audience to a larger extent. But due to technology become more advanced over the years people have become aware of software such as photoshop which can be used in documentries to enhance the image of people so therefore the audience will become more sceptical of how realistic some campaigns are. Some social action campaigns have proven to be rather effective. The impact of many productions have really entised an audience and made them realise what goes on outside of their lives. Many people will find that they can relate so some of the documentaries in some way be that they have experienced it themselves or a family member or friend has gone through it. This makes the audience take a moment to think about what they may be able to do help the situation and if the issue is within their local community it will help them think about something they may be able to do to reduce the problem.

An example of social action media impacting an international audience would be KONY 2012.

The purpose of the campaign was primarily to raise awareness about Joseph Kony in order to get the US government to commit to locating and arresting him.  Joseph Kony is a rebel leader who has for 20 years abducted children in his quest to raise an army of boys, forced to kill others and their own families, whilst girls are raped and vilified and treated as sex slaves.  The campaign begins with the meeting of one American man and a African boy called Jacob, a victim of this monstrosity.  The American man whose name is Jason Russell, was touched by Jacobs story and begun a revolution to change the face of not only the issues surrounding Joseph Kony and his rebel mission but also the way that media can be used as a tool to change the world.

The Kony 2012 video has had over 43 million views in only two days on YouTube. It entices the audience as it is something most people have not heard about before. The average viral video on YouTube is only two minutes or less, Kony 2012 video lasts for half an hour. The first part of the video shows people connecting with each other and the value of friendship. This emotionally impacts the audience and makes them relate to their own friendships. The video then immediately grabs the audiences attention and starts showing the experiment. It then gets personal focusing on a child that is suffering. The leader of making the Kony 2012 video focused on his own family showing him talking to his son about the topic.

Community Media

Community media is any form of media that is created and controlled by a community. Community media is separate from commercial media, state run media and public broadcasting. Community media can be defined as media produced and circulated within one particular community. It is most popular in radio broadcasting. A number of radio stations have been set up with the intention of providing a service to local people. They often invite local residents to participate in part of the production and allow them to discuss issues related in that specific area. It is community owned and controlled giving access to voices in the community and encouraging diversity, creativity and participation. It encourages open dialogue and transparency of administration at local level and of a voice to those who want to put their opinions and voice across.

Community radio stations reflect a diverse mix of cultures and interests. There are many radio stations which cater for urban and other types of music, while others are aimed at younger people, older people, religious communities or the armed forces and their families. An example of a community radio station is Kane FM. It is a uk not-for profit local community radio station which broadcasts on FM and online across Guilford in Surrey and in the surrounding areas. It helps artists who are not famous but have a passion for music in the local community and broadcasts their music and work to get them known. Kane supply work experience for them also and talk to them about possibilities and future jobs they can get into. It helps people in the community that are into music develop and gain skills and give them an insight into what area of work they would like to do. This helps get people who may be unemployed in the local community get sorted and focused. They also have certain times where Kane FM talk about local issues in the community briefly and how they may be able to work together to resolve the issues.

Analysing interview technique

-name of interviewer
-context (role and importance of interview)
-purpose of interview (e.g research, enhancement of audience understanding, informative, expressing opinion, holding to account justification, emotional appeal to audience
-question types (closed, open, single, multiple, direct, suggestive)
-structure (intro, developmental questions, confidence-building, sound bites, summary)
-communication skills-building rapport, active, listening, body language, telephone techniques, to obtain comments or gather information.

-Krishnan Guru-murthy richard ayade

The context of the interview was formal as it was being published on Channel 4 news. Juxtaposing the fact that it is a formal interview there are elements throughout the whole interview of informalities. The host and interviewer called Krishnan Guru-Murthy found out towards the beginning of the interview that Richard Ayade who was the interviewee did not like interviews and soon turned the interview round to himself asking Krishnan Guru-Murthy the questions instead creating humorous elements throughout the duration of the interview.

The purpose of the interview was to talk to Richard Ayade about what he does and to also promote his work and his new book. It was supposed to be an informative interview and to expand the knowledge of the audience about Richard Ayade.

The question types varied at the beginning but towards the middle and end the questions changed. In the beginning Krishnan Guru-Murthy took the lead of asking the questions and introducing what they would be talking about as he was the interviewer but it soon changed when Richard Ayade started replying to the questions asked to him with another question back to the interviewer. So his answer would be a question. The questions asked by the interviewer varied from open to closed but were mostly open and direct. This is what created the humorous effect on the interview and what maybe made it stand out from other interviews normally watched.

The structure of the interview definitely held formal elements throughout the whole thing although Richard Ayade brought elements of informality and humour to the interview.

Kony 2012 response

The effectiveness of the documentary is extraordinary and this is for several reasons.  Firstly it is based not only upon a true and emotionally touching issue and story but he also uses the plight of one individual boy that the viewer can then relate to on a personal level.  The documentary shows powerfully upsetting imagery that is often unseen in the media and touches a raw nerve.  It singles out the perpetrator as an invisible entity and makes you want to join the cause in finding him.  It touches on all of the disgusting facts that are relevant as a result of this one rebel.  It cleverly lets you know that the government were initially not able to help and then lets you watch as a powerful entity of people come together and begin a change and start a process of government turn around.  Then just at the right part of the film we see that organisations are born, 'the invisible children' and the 'TRI' and 'Kony 2012'.  There is a place therefore to pledge money, a charity organisation, a group that you as the viewer want to be part of.  They use a logo to great effect.  Music is used to heighten the emotion of the documentary.  There is a brilliant use of film and news footage to grasp your attention and keep you up to speed on the current state of affairs (at that time).  The use of celebrity endorsement was perfect in relating the young to a cause that was shared with important and familiar people.  Then the film gives you deadlines, a date to remember, this is well used to push for action and make things seem imminent and with urgency.  The film makes you care.  It feels like a revolution that you want to be part of and not just because you want Joseph Kony caught but because you want to be part of something great, something important and something that will change history.

My personal feelings about the documentary is that is was very poignant.  It made me want cry.  It caused an emotional response and I thought it got the point across with great affect.   I was driven to sign up, pledge money, join in.  It created a feeling that made me want to be part of it, part of finding this invisible rebel and getting him arrested.  I think that the film was genius.  It was perfectly put together and left no stone unturned in its quest to create a following, a worldwide following.  It has used the media to its full benefit and I hope that as a result their aim is met.  As soon as the docu had finished I found myself googling Joseph Kony to see if he had been arrested since.  I will now never forget his name.

What is this media form trying to tell us/make us do?
-To campaign and to help people build relationships with the homeless. Also have included making packs for the homeless to show the impact of such a small idea such as giving someone a toothbrush to meaning lots to the people who are suffering from being homeless. It is also making the audience perceive homeless people in different manners as they are including information about some of them actually having jobs and also touching on she sensitive stories that the homeless have gone through.

What emotional techniques do you think they have used and why?
-They have included people talking about domestic violence in order to make the audience realise that it is not just people who are not earning money that are homeless it can in fact be sufferers of domestic abuse and any other form of abuse/violence which has led them to have to leave their house in order to feel safe and more protected even if that means they are left on the street homeless.

Food for thought

Which of the list of purposes apply?
-To change attitudes
-To create or strengthen community ties

What is this media form trying to tell us/make us do?
-It is trying to make the public aware that little independents that have being well for years and years are starting to get pushed aside due to rent going up and bigger companies and chains moving in. The main focus is on the topic of greed. Making the public aware that before all the new shops or banks there were shops there before them which have now been closed down.

What emotional techniques do you think they have used and why?
-They have used emotional techniques such as talking about prices. The lady stated about if they wanted to stay there they would have to increase their prices which would cut out many of their customers which she said she would rather close the shop then lose out on customers that have supported them for years.
